Sports Vision & Awareness

Last Updated on September 9, 2025

Having good vision and awareness are common skills important in all team sports. However, it might be often overshadowed by the focus on practicing the mechanical skills required to play the game. The following videos discuss two aspects of vision.

First, vision is important when performing skills that require aiming. You may have heard of advice to “keep your eye on the ball” or “keep you eye on the target”. As discussed in the video, there is merit to having a purposeful focus on your target, which the video’s researchers call “the quiet eye”.

Second, vision is important to improve your awareness on the field or court. It is important to continuously be aware of both your teammates and opponents in order to read, anticipate, and react to the game play. The following video discusses how to improve your vision and awareness using soccer as an example, but the principles can be applied to other sports too.
